Freddie Freeman delivered the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history, propelling the Los Angeles Dodgers to a thrilling 6-3 extra-inning victory over the New York Yankees in Game 1 at Dodger Stadium.
Locked at 2-2 through nine innings, Great Britain’s Jazz Chisholm Jr sparked a Yankees rally in the 10th, edging them ahead with a narrow lead. But the Yankees’ decision to intentionally walk Mookie Betts, loading the bases with two outs for Freeman, proved costly.
The series opener began as a pitching showdown, with Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty and Yankees ace Gerrit Cole trading scoreless frames. The Dodgers broke through in the fifth inning when Enrique Hernandez, one of just two Dodgers to reach base by then, scored on a sacrifice fly from Will Smith.
The Yankees, appearing in their first World Series since 2009, quickly answered back as Giancarlo Stanton launched a two-run homer off Flaherty.
Despite missed scoring opportunities on both sides, the Dodgers tied it up in the eighth when Shohei Ohtani smacked a double to center, moved to third on a fielding error, and scored on Betts' sacrifice fly.
The Yankees thought they regained the lead in the ninth when Gleyber Torres drove a deep ball to center field, but fan interference was called after a replay review, keeping the score tied as Torres was sent back to second. Yankees star Aaron Judge, who struck out three times, stranded two runners, setting up extra innings.
In the 10th, Chisholm stole two bases before Anthony Volpe singled to put the Yankees up 3-2.
However, the Dodgers responded with two runners on base. Ohtani missed his chance to end it, but Freeman seized the moment, securing a dramatic victory.
The best-of-seven series continues Saturday at Dodger Stadium, before shifting to New York on Monday.
